I am working with the communication network of the cells. There are special proteins talking to each other. I am collecting and analysing data on their communication, and develop websites to help other researchers to examine these proteins. I am particularly interested about a special process in the cell, called autophagy (cellular self-eating), a mechanisms that helps cells to survive upon stress. The problem that this process helps not only normal but diseased (e.g., cancer) cells as well. Interestingly, some bacterial species present in our gut can modulate this process. Some of these ‘bugs’ help, thus they are beneficial for us and we often call these probiotics. However, there are some that are bad and could cause many problems, so we take antibiotics to kill them. But how can we know which antibiotics is killing only the bad bacteria and leaves the good ones unaffected? In my research study, I try to find ways to understand this and help other researchers to investigate the details.
