The reason is actually simpler than you would imagine!

It’s the same principle of a spray bottle! When you have a spray bottle of deodorant for example, the deodorant is compressed inside the bottle (we are keeping it at a high pressure, so that we have a lot of deodorant in a small bottle!), but when we press on the button to release the deodorant the gas just goes every where!

So on Earth we have a constant pressure thanks to the atmosphere that keeps us in a nice “bottle”, but outer-space is much less dense than our atmosphere, so the astronaut’s helmets need to keep the body and the head at the constant pressure that we have on Earth! So the helmet breaks all the gas and liquids in your body will be thrown out (just like in the deodorant bottle) and there will be a kind of spray of human liquid/gas from your helmet :/

Actually, the idea that your head explodes in space is a commonly believed myth! Our skin and bones are strong enough to hold us together, even in the vacuum of space, and our circulatory system (our veins and arteries and heart) can adapt a lot, so that even in space our blood doesn’t immediately start to expand and boil.

Now, if you hang around space without a helmet you will still end up dying, but it just won’t be as fun to watch >.>
