• Question: How can we make recycling easier?

      I think one way to make recycling easier would be to stop using approximately 5 different kinds of plastics and stick to containers made of glass, so we don’t have to bother with sorting plastic anymore. In fact, plastic can only be recycled a few times, because every time it is melted and reformed, it becomes more breakable. But glass can be melted and reformed over and over again and still be just as strong. The farther we move away from artificial materials like plastic in general, the better!

      I lived in Japan for a long time and Japan is far more advanced than we are on recycling!

      Kids are used to recycle everything since they are very young and nothing get wasted in Japan! If you’re travelling around Japan you will notice that there are *only* recycle bins around, because most of the products they use are completely recycleable. If you have some big piece of metal or something you are not sure how to dispose of, there are special places where you take your “I don’t know how to recycle” stuff and they will help you sorting that out.

      Current recycling in the UK isn’t bad. Most people can recycle glass, cardboard and plastics without much effort. However, some of the most damaging mining is for stuff called “rare earth materials” that are found in electronics (phones, laptops, TVs, batteries), and it’s not straight forward to recycle some of these things. You have to take them to a specialist recycling place. I would like to see us move to a situation where almost everything can be recycled from your doorstep.

      This might happen in the near future, because people can make quite a lot of money from these recycled materials.
