I would say the “chicken”, in the sense that evolutionary speaking we all come from the first small bacteria that were on Earth maybe 3000 million years ago! What happened is that from an organism with one cell, we slowly moved to multi-cellular organisms (more than 1 cell per organism).
A 1 cell organism can reproduce just “dividing” itself. It gets more complicated for multi-cellular organisms… So my guess is that the multi-cellular organisms came first (probably by error, chance or random mutation) and then they developed a way to reproduce … Although I’m just guessing here!
I think Johanna and Tamas have a better shot than me at answering this question 😀

I think technically, the answer would be ‘egg’?
If we look at what probably happened in evolution, the idea would be that some prehistoric animal that was almost like a chicken mutated (evolved) into the chicken we know today.

This means that once, an almost-chicken laid an egg with a small mutation, which hatched the chicken we know today. Thus, the egg came first.
      (maybe?)

Well… you didn’t say what kind of egg… In which case, the egg definitely came first. Insects and other animals had been laying eggs for a long time before chickens came along. 😉
