The reason is because cats are really smart (or so I think). If you watch a video of a cat falling down you can see that they turn their whole body (helping themselves with shoulders and tail) before getting to the floor. Actually it’s more dangerous for a cat to fall down from something low than from something high. If a cat falls down from something too low, it won’t have the time to turn completely and fall on its feet!

Cats can twist themselves into new positions because they have amazingly flexible backbones and no collarbones!

As a demonstration, you can see here the weirdest cat gif I’ve ever looked at (and I’ve seen a loooot of cat gifs)

Just to add some more stats to Linda’s post. According to a study by some vets in New York in the 1980s, of 115 cats who fell from high-rise apartments, 90% survived, including one who fell from the 32nd floor!!

Cats that fell from above the 9th floor suffered less injury than those that fell from lower heights. Wow!

Here is a link to some info on that study: http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/domestic-cat-info5.htm
